My Journey with HTML

This second quarter, I learned a lot about HTML, a language used to create websites. I discovered how to use different HTML tags, each with its own purpose, to organize and structure a webpage. It was exciting to see how a simple tag can turn into something useful and creative on the screen. Learning how to put these tags together to make a webpage was a big accomplishment for me, and it made me appreciate how websites work.

At the beginning, I felt confused because there were so many tags to remember, and I wasn’t sure how to use them properly. It was confusing to organize my code in a way that made sense, and sometimes I would get errors that I didn’t know how to fix. This made me feel a little frustrated at times.

To deal with these problems, I practiced a lot by creating simple web pages and then slowly trying more difficult ones. When I didn’t understand something, I asked for help from my teacher and classmates, who were very supportive. This practice helped me understand the tags better, and I became more skilled in coding.

Moving forward, I will keep practicing HTML so I can get even better at it. I also want to start learning about CSS, which can make web pages look more attractive. I plan to look for more resources, like videos or websites, to help me learn more about web development. I will stay patient with myself and keep working hard, knowing that every mistake is a chance to learn something new.

Safe Homes, Stronger Communities

The Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) Act of 2004 (R.A. No. 9262) is a law that protects women and children from harm, such as physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse. It provides help for victims through protection orders, counseling, and legal actions against abusers. This law is an important step in making sure women and children feel safe and supported, especially at home and in relationships. The campaign spreads information about R.A. 9262 through events and activities to encourage people to take action against violence. Communities are urged to support victims and report cases of abuse. By promoting this law, the campaign helps create a safer and more respectful society where women and children can live without fear of violence.

The law is a key focus during the 18-day Campaign to End Violence Against Women, held every year from November 25 to December 12. This campaign aims to educate people about women’s rights and raise awareness of the different forms of violence that the law addresses. It reminds everyone that abuse is wrong and that victims have the right to seek help and protection.

The Anti-Rape Law of 1997, or Republic Act No. 8353, redefined rape as a crime against a person, emphasizing the violation of human dignity and physical integrity. This law expanded the definition of rape to include acts committed through force, threats, intimidation, or in situations where the victim is unable to give consent, such as being unconscious or under the influence of drugs. By broadening the scope of the offense, RA 8353 ensures that victims receive justice and that perpetrators face stricter penalties. It reinforces the importance of consent and establishes that any sexual act without mutual agreement is a serious crime.

The Safe Spaces Act, or Republic Act No. 11313, addresses sexual harassment in public and online spaces, creating safer environments for everyone, particularly women. It prohibits acts such as catcalling, stalking, and online harassment, recognizing that these behaviors harm personal dignity and safety. This law extends protection to both physical and digital spaces, reflecting the evolving nature of harassment in modern society. By imposing penalties on offenders and providing accessible avenues for reporting, RA 11313 empowers victims to speak out and promotes a culture of respect and accountability in all settings.

Elpidio Quirino: A Legacy of Service and Leadership

The life of Elpidio Quirino, the sixth President of the Philippines, is a remarkable story of perseverance, dedication, and leadership. Born on November 16, 1890, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, Quirino rose from humble beginnings to become a key figure in post-war Philippine reconstruction. His journey from a modest upbringing to the highest office of the land reflects his unwavering commitment to the Filipino people.

Quirino’s early life was marked by challenges. The son of a farmer and a schoolteacher, he grew up in a rural setting where resources were scarce. Despite this, he excelled academically, earning a law degree from the University of the Philippines in 1915. His entry into public service began as a technical assistant in the Philippine Commission, and his passion for governance soon led him to politics. As a representative of Ilocos Sur in the Philippine Assembly, Quirino championed reforms in education and social welfare, setting the stage for a distinguished career.

Quirino’s presidency focused on economic stability, rehabilitation, and international diplomacy. His administration established the Agricultural Credit Cooperative Financing Administration (ACCFA) to support farmers and improve rural livelihoods. Education also became a priority, with efforts to rebuild schools and expand access to learning. On the global stage, Quirino strengthened the Philippines’ international standing by fostering alliances and joining organizations such as the United Nations. While his administration faced criticisms of corruption, Quirino’s legacy as a leader who navigated the complexities of post-war governance remains significant. His resilience and vision for the Philippines laid the groundwork for future progress.

Elpidio Quirino’s life serves as an inspiration to all Filipinos. From his modest roots to his pivotal role in nation-building, his story is a testament to the power of perseverance and public service. As we look back on his achievements, we are reminded of the enduring values of leadership, dedication, and patriotism.

Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Communities

Every October, our country observes National Indigenous Peoples Month, a celebration dedicated to recognizing and honoring the invaluable contributions of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) to the nation. This year, the commemoration carries a deeper significance as it coincides with the 27th anniversary of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA), signed into law in 1997. With the theme, “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan at Parangalana” (Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge), the month-long event aims to shed light on the rights, culture, and heritage of Indigenous communities across the country. The IPRA, hailed as a landmark legislation, underscores the importance of recognizing the rights of Indigenous Peoples over their ancestral domains, self-governance, and cultural integrity. By promoting the law and its benefits, this year’s observance seeks to address ongoing challenges such as land disputes, marginalization, and cultural erosion. Events such as dialogues between IP leaders and policymakers, cultural showcases, and educational campaigns not only highlight the rich traditions of Indigenous communities but also emphasize their role in shaping the nation’s identity.

Moreover, the celebration serves as a platform to protect and promote Indigenous knowledge systems. Traditional practices in farming, medicine, and resource management, often dismissed in modern contexts, are now being acknowledged for their sustainable and holistic approaches. Educational institutions and organizations are encouraged to integrate these knowledge systems into curricula and programs, ensuring their preservation and relevance for future generations.

Beyond cultural appreciation, the observance underscores the need for active empowerment. Indigenous Peoples continue to face significant socio-economic challenges, from limited access to education and healthcare to political underrepresentation. By commemorating this month, the nation reaffirms its commitment to creating an inclusive society where IPs can thrive and fully enjoy their rights.

As we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Month 2024, let us take a moment to reflect on the value of our Indigenous communities. By nurturing their knowledge and honoring their contributions, we are not only preserving our heritage but also building a future that respects and uplifts all voices.

Fighting For Tomorrow, For A Brighter Philippines

Our country faces significant challenges due to climate change. Climate change is not just an environmental problem, it is a people problem. It has caused environmental changes that impact Filipino lives and living conditions. The changes we see in our environment today are caused by human activity and natural processes. This issue is the harsh reality of global warming. For example, deforestation leaves our lands vulnerable to landslides and floods during heavy rains. This can cause loss of natural barriers that help absorb water and stabilize the soil.

Despite the challenges, the resilience of the Filipinos shines through.
Time and again, we’ve rebuilt after disasters, endured during extended droughts, and stood together in the face of difficulties. However, resilience alone is not enough. Adapting to climate change is no longer optional, it is important for our survival. We, Filipinos, have always been known for the “bayanihan” spirit, where communities come together to help one another. Resilience should not mean constantly rebuilding from calamities but preventing them from becoming worse.

Climate change affects everyone. We don’t have to let climate change define us. Instead, let’s define how we respond to it by turning struggles into solutions and hope into action. Together, we can ensure that our country remains not just a land of beauty but also a beacon of strength for generations to come. Let’s turn this into a movement that empowers us to rise above and become stronger. Because at the heart of every Filipino is a fighter, a dreamer who believes in a brighter, better tomorrow.

From Harm to Hope

Every child deserves to grow up in a world free from harm, in an environment where they feel safe, loved, and valued. Unfortunately, many children still face situations that threaten their safety and development like violence, neglect, fear, and abuse. These experiences can leave scars on them, not just on their bodies but on their hearts and minds, making it harder for them to trust and thrive.

It is heartbreaking to think that many of the children in this generation are struggling with things no one talks about. They need a safe place to be themselves, to laugh, to learn, and to grow without being afraid. This month's theme is to break the cycle of violence and create spaces where children can truly thrive. It starts at home, with families showing love, understanding, and support.

Ending violence isn't just stopping harm, it's about replacing it with hope and opportunities. By doing this, we're not just protecting the present but building their future. Every act of kindness and voice raised makes a safer Philippines. We all have a part to play. Together, we can break the violence and give every child the safe and loving environment they deserve.

Take a Step for a Greener Future

September is not only Environmental Awareness Month but also National Clean Up Drive Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about environmental issues and taking concrete action to address them. By coming together for community clean-ups and adopting eco-friendly habits, we can turn awareness into action and help protect the earth for future generations. This is a call to reflect on our impact on nature, from the everyday waste we produce to the larger environmental challenges such as pollution, deforestation, and climate change. The observances matter and how small actions can help create a healthier, greener world.

As an officer of the Yes-o, it is also our
 responsibility to protect our environment.
As part of it, we are conducting a Clean-up Drive
every Friday for a clean and green environment.

Joining a Coastal Clean-up Drive to collect
and remove the trash scattered around the area
to reduce pollution, preserve natural beauty,
and to promote environmental sustainability.

Planting trees and caring for it. This
simple yet impactful effort contributes to
a greener, more sustainable future for
generations to come.

Together, these efforts inspire collective responsibility, proving that when we work as one, we can be a part of a global movement towards restoration and preservation. Every action counts, whether conducting or joining a clean-up drives, advocating for local environmental policies, or simply making more eco-friendly choices in our daily lives. When we come together, our individual efforts combine to form a powerful movement that can drive real change. As we look to the future, let’s commit to nurturing a sense of unity and purpose in our environmental efforts. By helping one another and supporting each other’s initiatives, we can create a legacy of sustainability and resilience. This is not just about preserving our planet for ourselves; it’s about ensuring a vibrant, thriving world for generations to come.

My 1st Quarter Learning Journey

In the first quarter of ICT, I learned how to create and manage blogs, from choosing topics to designing layouts that attract readers. I also gained knowledge about the internet's evolution by studying the internet timeline, which helped me appreciate its rapid development and impact on society. Additionally, I learned about various uses of the internet, including its role in communication, education, and entertainment. Understanding different data types and protocols made me more aware of how information is transferred and accessed online. Lastly, I acquired skills in properly citing sources, which is essential for maintaining credibility and avoiding plagiarism in digital contents.

Some challenges I faced included grasping technical terms related to data types and protocols, which initially felt overwhelming. Another difficulty was creating a blog that was both engaging and technically sound. Citing sources properly was also tricky at first, as different formats and rules are depending on the type of content and source used.

I addressed these challenges by breaking down complex topics into smaller, more understandable parts and researching additional resources, such as videos and tutorials, to reinforce my understanding. When creating my blog, I focused on experimenting with different layouts and features until I found a design that was both functional and appealing. For citing sources, I practiced using citation tools and sought guidance from my teacher to ensure I followed the correct format.

Moving on, I will continue to expand my knowledge by exploring more advanced aspects of the internet and blogging, and the use of multimedia in blogs. I will also work on improving my technical understanding of data protocols and ensure that I always correctly cite my sources. Furthermore, the skills I have learned about blogging and content creation will help me share information, ideas, or personal insights online.

Honoring the Teachers in Shaping our Nation's Future

The hard work, dedication, and influence of our teachers have a profound impact on the lives of their students. So as we celebrate World Teachers' Day is important for us to appreciate their incredible work. Without their invaluable contributions, our society would not be able to progress and thrive. It is important to honor and recognize the efforts of our teachers across the country. Teachers serve as mentors, counselors, and role models in addition to being just educators. They inspire their students to set high goals and accomplish them. They communicate knowledge and skills that are necessary for success in the world. They impart virtues to their kids, such as perseverance, kindness, and respect. To make sure that every kid has the chance to succeed and realize their full potential, teachers go above and beyond.

The hard work and dedication of teachers do not go unnoticed. They spend countless hours preparing lessons, grading papers, and providing individualized attention to students. They constantly seek to improve their teaching methods and stay up-to-date on the latest educational trends. Their commitment to their profession is admirable. Educators have an influence on the future of our nation. The knowledge and skills they impart to their students will shape the workforce of tomorrow. They play a vital role in building a strong and prosperous society. Without teachers, we would not have doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, or leaders.

A Stronger and More Resilient Philippines

The Philippines is a nation prone to natural disasters, and it is strong to enhance its resilience. The Philippines' vulnerability to natural disasters stems from its geographic location, which places it in the path of typhoons and earthquakes. Climate change has also increased these events, leading to frequent and serious events. Landslides and flooding are caused by deforestation and unsustainable land use practices. These factors have made the Philippines vulnerable to natural disasters.

To enhance resilience, the people in the community must practice what to do during disasters. The government has also created various strategies, like disaster preparedness, warning systems, and infrastructure upgrades. The local community has also been actively involved in disaster risk reduction activities, such as evacuation drills, building shelters, and promoting awareness. The Philippines has sought assistance from international organizations and other countries to strengthen its resilience. To reduce the greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the changing climate, the government has implemented measures to mitigate climate change.

Despite the efforts to enhance resilience, the Philippines faces several significant challenges. The challenges include poverty, limited resources, and fast organization. Poverty limits the ability of many individuals and communities to cope with disasters, while limited resources restrict government efforts. Rapid urbanization has increased vulnerability in urban areas, particularly to flooding and earthquakes. Lastly, climate change has long-term threats, including rising sea levels and more frequent extreme weather events.

A Letter to the President

CastaƱeda, Gerchelle R.

Brgy. IV, Vigan City, Ilocos Sur

August 22, 2024

Dear President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. I would like to take this opportunity to express my thoughts and concerns about your administration's efforts and the current state of our nation.

First, I would like to appreciate your effort in your leadership and vision for the Philippines. I would also like to commend you for continuing the critical infrastructure programs you started in previous administrations. Your administration's ongoing commitment to modernizing our transportation systems, roads, and public utilities is commendable. I recognized that these projects are vital to improving our country's connectivity which is essential for national development. I also want to express my hope that your administration continues to prioritize social welfare, education, and healthcare. I trust that under your leadership, we will see further reforms in these areas that will improve the lives of all Filipinos. I also want to state my concern because over the past months, many families have been struggling due to the continuous rise in food prices, particularly rice, vegetables, and other essential commodities. This situation is alarming, especially for low-income households who bear the brunt of these price hikes. I believe one key to addressing this issue lies in strengthening our agricultural sector. I respectfully urge you, Mr. President, to prioritize the concerns of Filipinos like me, as addressing them will greatly contribute to the well-being of our nation. I remain optimistic that your leadership will guide us towards a more prosperous and just society.

Sincerely,

Gerchelle Castaneda

Unveiling Thoughts & Life

Being the eldest daughter in our family is difficult. My parents taught me how to be a responsible daughter, student, and a sister. Ever since when I was a kid, I am always seen as a loving, sweet, caring, and independent girl. As growing up, I was forced to think for myself, but little did they know that I was doing this already when I was little. One of the most crushing features of growing up is the weight of expectations. Being the eldest daughter is hard because no matter what I achieved, it was never enough. It's hard because there must always be a new standard to meet.

Some people say self-doubt can kill your confidence, and I have proven that already. I always have self-doubts and don't believe in my own abilities. But this school year, I will improve my confidence. Although I know that it will be challenging, I will still help myself to boost my confidence. I will learn from my mistakes and use this to do better next time, because I know that failure is a normal part of the learning process and will not and never see this as a setback. While building this confidence of mine, I will not forget to enjoy this junior high school journey. Despite all the pressures, expectations, and struggles that I will be going through, I will still embrace myself, the little me.

Behind the heavy weight of expectations, I will promise myself to do my best. I will achieve my dreams and goals in life, and make my parents proud. I will promise myself that one day, I will help people to feel better. Giving up will never be my choice. I know I will have a struggle, but that doesn't mean that I will give up already. I will be responsible in my studies, I will let my tears come out of my eyes but I will always have faith to God that I can. Someday, I will be proud to the younger me and tell her that "finally, you did it".
